PhD Student Position in the History of Medicine
The Institute of Humanities in Medicine, attached to the Department of Education and Research (DFR) at CHUV and the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM) at UNIL, invites applications for a fully funded PhD-Position (4 years, 100%) in the history of medicine. The position will start on September 1, 2025 (negotiable, latest possible starting date: 1 February 2026).
Contexte
The Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois (CHUV) is one of Switzerland's 5 university hospitals. Thanks to its collaboration with the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne and the EPFL, the CHUV plays a leading role in the fields of medical care, medical research and education.
The PhD-thesis will be realized in the framework of the SNSF Starting Grant project (primary investigator: Felix E. Rietmann) “Pediatric Drugs since 1945: From Local Practice to Global Politics.” The project examines the clinical use, administrative regulation, and scientific marketing of pediatric pharmaceuticals in (and beyond) Switzerland across the second half of the twentieth century.
Mission
The PhD-student will conduct his or her own independent research project within the above-mentioned framework, focusing on the interplay between the management of pediatric diseases and the evolving pharmaceutical market. Potential topics include but are not limited to the history of antibiotics and pediatric infectious diseases, the history of nutrition in children, or the history of psychopharmaceuticals and child psychiatric conditions. The doctoral thesis will be part of the PhD program in the Humanities and Social Sciences of Medicine and Health of the FBM.
